Ted Carlson Papers, 1944-1947, Scope and Content Note

The Ted Carlson Papers, dated 1944 - 1947, consist of correspdence with family (Middleton, CT) and friends, an article that he edited as a member of the Dayton Association of Scientists (June 24, 1946) and administrative papers related to school and his military service, covering his life from earning his undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University (Middleton, Conneticut) until he was discharged from the military and accepted into Cornell Medical School (New York, NY). Most of the correspondence includes letters home documenting his personal life and his views on the use of atomic energy. The administrative papers document his school achievements and military orders. Within the correspondence, Ted Carlson revealed that he had been working for the Manhattan District [Manhattan Project] at the Chrysler Corporation and in 1945, reassigned to Monsanto Company in Dayton, Ohio. He describes, in detail, sheets of stamps that he wished to acquire for his philately hobby.


Series I: Personal Correspondence, 1944-1947, contains letters written by Ted, his parents, relatives and friends.

Series II: Bulletin of Dayton Association of Scientists edited by E.T. Carlson and S. H. Styles, June 24, 1946, which advocates for the passage of the McMahon Bill [Atomic Energy Act].

Series III: Administrative Correspondence and Identification Documents, 1944-1947.

Subseries I: University Documents related to Wesleyan University, Iowa State College and Cornell University Medical College [Weill Cornell Medical College].

Subseries II: United States Army Documents, including the civilian job offer from Monsanto Company.
